Understanding Trauma

Trauma results from experiencing or witnessing a distressing event or series of events that overwhelm an individual's ability to cope. It is normal to feel upset or shaken after a traumatic event.

Trauma Disorders

Trauma Disorders occur when the effects of trauma are severe and long-lasting, significantly impairing daily functioning. Trauma disorders include Acute Stress Disorder and Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD), characterized by symptoms like flashbacks, nightmares, severe anxiety, and emotional numbness.

Examples of trauma disorders:

  • Experiencing flashbacks or nightmares related to the traumatic event.

  • Avoiding places or situations that trigger memories of the trauma.

  • Feeling emotionally numb and detached from others for a prolonged period.

Examples of feeling traumatized:

  • Feeling upset after witnessing a car accident.

  • Experiencing distress after a natural disaster.

  • Being shaken by a sudden loss or shocking event.

Understanding PTSD

Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) is a mental health condition that can develop after experiencing or witnessing a traumatic event. It is normal to feel fear, anxiety, or distress after a traumatic event.

PTSD

PTSD differs from normal post-traumatic stress in that the symptoms are severe and persistent, often lasting for months or years after the event. Symptoms include intrusive memories, avoidance of reminders of the trauma, negative changes in mood and cognition, and heightened arousal or reactivity.

Complex PTSD

Complex PTSD (C-PTSD) is a more severe form of PTSD that can result from prolonged or repeated trauma, such as childhood abuse, domestic violence, or being held captive. While it shares many symptoms with PTSD, C-PTSD also includes difficulties with emotional regulation, consciousness (such as dissociation), self-perception, and interpersonal relationships. Individuals with C-PTSD may experience intense feelings of shame, guilt, or worthlessness and struggle with maintaining healthy relationships. Treatment typically involves a combination of therapy, medication, and support to address both the trauma and its long-term impacts on emotional and psychological well-being.

Examples of normal post-traumatic stress:

  • Feeling anxious or fearful for a short period after a traumatic event.

  • Having occasional nightmares or flashbacks related to the trauma.

  • Being temporarily on edge or hypervigilant after a distressing experience.

Examples of PTSD:

  • Experiencing frequent and intense flashbacks or nightmares of the traumatic event.

  • Avoiding places, people, or activities that trigger memories of the trauma.

  • Feeling constantly on edge, easily startled, or having difficulty sleeping for an extended period.
