Understanding Anxiety

Anxiety is a natural response to stress, characterized by feelings of worry, nervousness, or fear. It can be a normal part of life to feel anxious about situations like an upcoming exam, a job interview, or moving to a new place. This type of anxiety can help you stay alert and focused.

What is Anxiety Disorder?

Anxiety Disorder occurs when anxiety becomes excessive, persistent, and interferes with daily activities. Unlike normal anxiety, anxiety disorders can cause significant distress and may persist even when there is no real threat. Examples of anxiety disorders include Generalized Anxiety Disorder (GAD), Panic Disorder, Social Anxiety Disorder, and specific phobias. Symptoms may include chronic worry, panic attacks, and avoidance of anxiety-provoking situations.

Examples of anxiety disorder:

  • Constantly worrying about everyday situations without a clear cause.

  • Experiencing panic attacks in crowded places or specific situations.

  • Avoiding social interactions due to intense fear of judgment.

Examples of anxiety:

  • Feeling anxious before a big presentation.

  • Worrying about a loved one’s health.

  • Nervousness before a major life change.

What is Panic Disorder?

Panic Disorder is characterized by recurrent, unexpected panic attacks—sudden periods of intense fear or discomfort that reach a peak within minutes. These attacks can occur without a clear trigger and may include physical symptoms like a racing heart, sweating, trembling, and shortness of breath.

Examples of panic disorder:

  • Sudden, repeated attacks of fear.

  • Feeling out of control during a panic attack.

  • Intense worry about when the next attack will happen.
